Democrats pan agency's jobless benefits advice

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Democratic leaders at the General Assembly are criticizing how Gov. Pat McCrory's administration is advising staff members of legislators about responding to constituent questions about changes to North Carolina's unemployment system.

Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt of Asheville and House counterpart Larry Hall of Durham wrote to McCrory on Wednesday saying it was inappropriate for a Commerce Department official overseeing unemployment benefits to provide what they called "talking points" without their consent.

A law will reduce future benefits for the newly unemployed as of July 1. Federal emergency jobless benefits also will end, affecting tens of thousands of people.

A Commerce Department spokesman said the agency gave out fact sheets at a voluntary meeting so legislative assistants can tell callers how to get training from local unemployment offices.
