Police: Middle schooler used school-laptop to chat with sex offender

Police in Mooresville say a middle school student used a school-issued laptop to chat with a register sex offender.  Now a North Carolina teen and a man from New York are facing charges.

According to police, the incident involved a 12-year-old student from Mooresville Middle School back in February.

WBTV has learned that after the child's mother discovered the chat history on the computer, the school district confiscated the laptop. It was then turned over to police.

Police told WBTV that two people have been charged in the case.

A teenager, who was 16 during the chats, from Rutherford County was arrested in the case.

A convicted sex offender, in his 40's, who lives in New York has also been charged, police say. Officers say his name is not being made public because New York police are investigating him for additional charges.

The teenager and man are both facing charges for obscenity with a minor.
