Man who assaulted woman at Charlotte's Freedom Park still at large

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte are asking for the public's help in locating a man they say assaulted a woman in Freedom Park Tuesday morning.

The assault was reported around 9:05 a.m. near the park access at Sterling Road and Wellesley Avenue, according to a news release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The 52-year-old woman told police that she was walking in Freedom Park when the unknown suspect approached her from behind and assaulted her. Authorities say the attacker choked the woman, and then ran away.

The victim was able to call 911 once the assault had stopped and provided responding officers with a description of the suspect. 

CMPD's helicopter was requested to assist in searching the area. 

Medic transported the victim to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 30-40 years old, 6'0" tall, muscular build and medium skin tone. 

The suspect was last seen wearing gold tank top, dark shorts and sneakers. 

Providence Division has increased patrols in the area and encourage the public if they see something to say something by calling 911.
