Anniston attorney Ray Bryan has entered the Republican race for state auditor with a campaign promise to abolish the office.
Bryan said Tuesday he will work with the Legislature to get a constitutional amendment on the 2016 ballot to end the auditor's office. He says he would save money by transferring the duties to audit state property to the state Examiners of Public Accounts.
Bryan is the second candidate to announce for the Republican primary for auditor.
The first candidate, Adam Thompson, used to work in the auditor's office. He says transferring duties to the Examiners of Public Accounts is a bad idea because the examiners answer to the Legislature rather than the voters.
He says one branch of government doesn't need that much power and influence.
