Police: Man drank gasoline, lighter fluid before setting apartment on fire

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte say a man burned down his apartment and severely damaged two other, in an attempt to take his own life.

The residence of the other apartments had to evacuate due to the damage from the fires.

The fire was reported at 10:40 a.m. Monday on the 1700 block of Eastcrest Drive in east Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived with heavy smoke coming from one apartment.

The man had drank gasoline and lighter fluid before setting his apartment on fire, according to the report.

Firefighters were able to rescue the man and police and medics transported the man to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.
