The warning signs of a compulsive shopper - WBTV 3 News, Weather, Sports, and Traffic for Charlotte, NC

Are you a compulsive shopper?

Doorbuster deals and sales - they make it easy for any of us to overspend. But Money Expert Nathan Bachrach says resisting the temptation is much harder for the six percent of Americans who are compulsive shoppers.

Here are some of the warning signs:

Do you hide what you buy from loved ones? Do you lie about what you're spending? Do you lie about where you're going when you're actually going shopping?

If your shopping habits are affecting your relationship with your loved ones, it's time to get help.

If you don't, things may get much worse. Compulsive shoppers typically overspend for decades before they get help, and about half of them also hoard the items in their homes.

And most compulsive shoppers aren't wealthy folks who can afford the habit. In fact, most earn less than $50,000 per year.

Compulsive shopping usually emerges in the late teens or early twenties, and many compulsive shoppers also suffer from depression, anxiety or substance abuse problems.

And the ease of online shopping has only made things worse for compulsive shoppers. So Bachrach says if any of this sounds familiar, do look for some professional help.
