A graduation story: Beating the odds

Johnson C. Smith University's (JCSU) graduation will be special for Sasha Gay-Cunningham. She is graduating with a 4.0 GPA.  Her hard work is paying off.  She is from a rural part of Jamaica. She says her family stressed the importance of having a solid education.

"I came from a very poor family," Cunningham said. "We didn't have much, but with what little we had, they ensured I went to school on a daily basis."

She is getting a degree in Biology.  She received a scholarship to attend JCSU. She wants to become a medical doctor.  She says her humble beginnings pushed her to dream big.

"When I get older," the graduate said. "I will ensure that I will do enough work to get me to that point where I can live comfortably with my family and not be ashamed to invite my friends over."

After graduating from JCSU, she will then pursue a Masters degree.

"Never give up on your dream," Cunningham said. "It is all achievable. Impossible is just not a word. You can do anything you set your mind towards, so keep your head high. Go for your aim and just believe God is able."

252 people will graduate from JCSU. 121 of them will graduate with honors.
