PD: Crooks using new device that opens most hotel doors

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Burglars are using a new device to break into hotel rooms across the Valley. Investigators told CBS 5 it looks like a Sharpie marker.

This device works on any hotel room that can be accessed with a key card.

The tip is inserted into a port on the bottom of the lock, and within a few seconds, the door opens.

Police captured crooks using the device at a hotel in Phoenix on surveillance video.

"We're seeing crooks hit hotels from Motel 6 to Marriott and everything in between. There's nobody not touched by this it seems," said Silent Witness Sgt. Darren Burch.

Police say once you leave the hotel, the burglars will head to your room and load up your suitcase with anything that's valuable. Investigators said the crooks then leave the hotel, typically taking the stairs.

"These criminals look like tourists. They're sitting around in a hotel lobby listening to conversations, picking up intelligence," said Sgt. Burch.

This problem isn't just something that's happening in the Valley. Police across the country are seeing it.

Burch said until a software update comes along, there's nothing you or the hotel can do to stop it.
