Hualapai chairwoman leads through Skywalk battle

The Hualapai Tribe in northwestern Arizona is in the midst of its biggest legal battle ever over the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

The premiere tourist attraction on the reservation opened in 2007, but the tribe and the Las Vegas developer who built it are locked in a contract dispute.

Leading the tribe through it is a talkative, 55-year-old woman whose personal struggles led her to God and then politics. Sherry Counts tells The Associated Press that the tribe has much to lose in the legal tangle.

But the tribal chairwoman who was elected to the position last year has vowed to protect the tribe's sovereignty and manage its businesses. Counts says the tribe's not out to cheat Skywalk developer David Jin but wants to be treated fairly.
