Cold blast sets in across the Carolinas tonight

Behind last night's cold front, a very cold air mass is settling into the Carolinas today. That front brought overnight storms to many, but it's the air moving in behind it that will be the big talker through the first half of the week.

The cold front has set the stage for potentially freezing temperatures across portions of the WBTV viewing area tonight. As clouds move out and dry air moves in, the heat available from today's sunshine quickly radiates out into space. For elevations above 3,000 feet, that will likely mean lows at or near the freezing mark.

A Freeze Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for tonight through early Monday morning for Ashe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties.

Make sure sensitive plants are protected, and make sure pets have a warm place to spend the night.

Lows in the Piedmont will drop to near 40°.
