Catawba County asks for state help for flood damage

State officials toured the flood-damaged areas around Carpenter's Cove in Catawba County Wednesday morning. The teams are adding up damage estimates and compiling their own data to see if residents can get money from the state to repair or re-build their homes.

The state of emergency following last week's floods has now been lifted in Catawba County, but the cleanup and recovery continues.

And the County has now officially asked for disaster assistance from the State.

It comes after several days of tallying up damage.

County officials say one home was destroyed, more than 50 others damaged.

There's other expenses too in cleaning up roadways and parks. Catawba County Emergency Management Coordinator Karyn Yaussy says structural damage estimates add up to more than half a million dollars.

If the state approves a disaster declaration,  grants, loans and other help could be available.
