Retaining wall shifting; businesses forced to close

Posted: Updated:

A retaining wall has shifted behind two Gastonia businesses forcing the stores to close until engineers and inspectors can fix the problem.

The Sprint store and AAA Car Care Center in the 2500 block of E. Franklin Boulevard remained closed Friday evening.

Sprint customers were directed to go to another area location.

A sign on the doors of the businesses say the building is condemned until further notice.

Several drivers showed up at the car care center to find it closed and had no clue why until told by WBTV.

"I was quite looked empty and I thought today is not a holiday. All I want is an oil change but...parked my vehicle and got to the door and saw," Barbara Malone said.

It's unclear if the recent rains had anything to do with the shift or how long the wall had been damaged.

Signs in the parking lot below the buildings say the area is prone to flooding.

Tribek Properties did not respond to repeated requests for information about how long it might take to fix the problem.

Engineers were seen touring the inside of the buildings Friday to see if there was any structural damage.
