CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Mecklenburg County officials have confirmed that a kitten with rabies was found in east Charlotte, marking the fifth confirmed case for the County this year.

The kitten was found by a homeowner about four weeks ago. The owner kept the kitten inside, until it became ill, then aggressive on May 4.

The owner then took the kitten to Freedom Animal Hospital, where it was euthanized on May 5, in order to test for rabies.

On May 7, word came from the state lab that the animal had tested positive for rabies.

All those exposed to the animal, including the owner and vet employees, one of whom was scratched by the kitten, will obtain post-exposure shots, officials told WBTV.

The kitten is the fifth confirmed case of the disease this year, and the first to come from a domesticated animal. Three raccoons and one bat all tested positive in February, April, and May.
