CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Receding waters are an indication that recovery is just around the corner, and for families living on Mountain Island Lake the cleanup effort can't come soon enough.

Carol Pietras resides at the Mountain Island Mobile Home Park which can be considered right on the fault line.

She said, "It came up so fast and furious and everybody was scrambling to get their boats of the water and they couldn't."

Across the lake in Gaston County, home owners are waiting for water levels to go down before calling their insurance companies.

Bobby Riggins has been here for than 20 years and compares the downpours in his River Bend community to the rain left behind by Hurricane Hugo.

"Probably the docks have had the worst of it,"Riggins said.

High water levels are causing those who use Mountain Island Lake to keep safety in mind.

Despite the damage and the inconvenience those who call this place home say there life on the lake has its share of sacrifice.

"If you want to live on the lake, you've got to pay your dues. So owning a boat and having a pier or whatever you have to pay your dues for it," Pietras said.
