School secretary charged with embezzling school funds

LENOIR, NC (WBTV) -

Investigators in Caldwell County have charged a school secretary for taking thousands of dollars from a local school.

Emily Yvonne Hawkins, of Lenoir, is charged with 10 counts of embezzlement by a public officer or trustee, according to a news release from Caldwell County Schools.

Hawkins was the lead secretary at Collettsville School. Investigators say she had been making questionable purchases inn excess of $40,000.

Hawkins was taken before the magistrate and given a $100,000 Secured Bond. 

Sheriff Alan Jones stated "I'm Proud to see that two government agencies were able to work close together and stop an employee from taking money from our children within the Caldwell County School System."
