BESSEMER CITY, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Gaston County say a man is dead after an argument broke out with his neighbor and shots were fired.

According to Gaston County Police, officers were called to the 2000 block of Tryon Courthouse Road, just outside of Bessemer City, around 7:37 a.m. Wednesday morning.

When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Gary Campbell, fatally shot along the side of the road.

Police on the scene told WBTV that a man was cutting his grass around 8 o'clock Wednesday morning when an argument broke out with his neighbor, who was leaving for work.

According to police, Campbell was shot by Robert James Lewis, his neighbor and daughter's boyfriend.

The family has been involved in an ongoing domestic dispute, police told WBTV, resulting in Campbell's and daughters filing a Domestic Violence Protection Order against him.

That order was in effect at the time of the shooting.

Since September of 2007 the Gaston County Police Department has responded to numerous disturbance calls and domestic disputes at the two homes, WBTV has learned.

The investigation into this case is still ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time.

Anyone with information concerning this case or who may have been traveling in the area of Tryon Courthouse Rd. and Lee Hager Rd. during the time this incident occurred is asked to call the Gaston County Police Department at 704-866-3320 or Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000.
