Fate of CLT airport now in lawmakers' hands

RALEIGH, NC (WBTV) -

Determining the fate and the future of one of Charlotte's most prized jewels means the next phase of debate heads north to Raleigh.

That's where state lawmakers from Mecklenburg County will hear the results of a consultants study paid for by the city of Charlotte into what form of governing structure would be best to mange Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

State Sen. Dan Clodfelter of Mecklenburg County is among those waiting to hear the results.

"From what I've read from the consultant report, he's not convinced that the legislation that is current legislation is not the right way to move," he said.

It will be the third presentation of the study in recent days.

While the report was backed with local taxpayer dollars, city councilman Andy Dulin didn't like the outcome because it suggested that Charlotte Douglas be put in the hands of a regional authority.

Dulin said, "We appreciate the house leadership. It's slowing the process down letting us deliver our study and finding out how we can teak his study to be beneficial to both the city and the state and the region."

One of those who will be all ears is state sen. Malcolm Graham.

He lead the fight in the Senate against a state take over.

"I'm very concerned. I think the report is incomplete itself," he said." So it gives me an opportunity to ask some additional questions."

The NC House is expected to take up the airport issue in coming days.
