Taxi cab driver killed, two others hurt in south Charlotte crash

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a cab driver has died in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning. Detectives say alcohol and speed were factors.

Police say 23-year-old Justin Miller was speeding in his BMW on the 1800 block of Woodlawn Road around 2am when he struck the left side of a cab.

Officers say the cab driver was on Montord Drive, attempting to make a left on Woodlawn at the time. The impact of the collision caused the taxi driver to be ejected from his vehicle.

The driver was pronounced dead in an ambulance, on the way to the hospital. A police report shows the driver was not wearing a seat belt. Their identity has not been released.

Officers say Miller ran away from the scene of the crash but was caught and arrested a short time later. He was taken to a nearby hospital but has since been released.

A passenger inside his vehicle was also treated for injuries at the hospital.

Miller is facing a slew of serious charges, including Felony death by vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, driving while impaired and driving while license revoked.

Police say, prior to this crash, Miller's driver's license was suspended for a pending DWI arrest.

CMPD's Major Crash investigation Unit is continuing to gather information on this incident. Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
