One on One With Congressman Mel Watt

At a Center City Charlotte luncheon sponsored by the bar association, Congressman Mel Watt got a rock stars welcome.

He received a big show of public affection one day, after the president appointed him to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

It is the government regulator that oversees lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The representative of North Carolinas 12th district sat down with us in his Center City office, and he's ready for what some observers say may be a spirited of confirmation process.

He said, " I admire the role the senate has to play in this. I respect the role they have to play."

On Capitol Hill, senate confirmation may have it's share of theatrics.

While North Carolina republican Richard Burr supports Watt, GOP senator Bob Corker has gone on record opposing the nomination.

And other critics are concerned about PAC money that he's received from banking and housing interest.

Watt says it's all been above board.

"If you look at my fundraising record compared to other members of congress, you'll find out how little I've raised from either pacs or individuals.

On the ground in Charlotte he's supported a number of affordable housing initiatives including Siegel Point and 1st ward place.

He said, " I hope the senate recognizes that skill and recognizes that it's a positive skill set.

On the day that the congressman became front page news in his hometown, his insights became philosophical.

" I hope that I am able to do some good things for America and I hope that I can make my mama proud."

Congressman Mel Watt's confirmation hearing is expected to wrap up by July 4th.
