Rain can't dampen spirits at Wells Fargo Championship

Posted: Updated:

Rain didn't seem to put a damper on the enthusiasm of fans for round one of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte Thursday.

Cool, damp weather meant fans were wearing everything from shorts and tee shirts to rain gear and heavy coats.  The merchandise tent was busy.  One clerk told WBTV that anything long sleeved was selling well.  Fans interested in picking up any souvenirs will notice a large selection of items bearing both the Wells Fargo Championship and Quail Hollow logos.  Prices vary, most golf shirts were priced above $50.

During the day fans also had to deal with the occasional misty shower.  It wasn't enough to stop play on the course and was a minor inconvenience for most.

Fans coming to Quail Hollow Club did notice what seemed to be a bigger security presence.  Fans were wanded with metal detectors, usually more than once, as they came to the course.

Earlier in the week there had been worry on the part of some that the greens on the course weren't in very good shape.  On Thursday, several golfers carded 67's and 68's, and said in post round interviews that the greens did not cause any issues for them.

Several fans spoke to WBTV as they were leaving the course, and most said it was an enjoyable day.  One fan remarked aside from the absence of Tiger Woods, it was nearly perfect.
