Opening of new uptown park delayed due to bad weather

The grand opening of Romare Bearden Park, originally scheduled for June 14 and 15, has been postponed until late August due to delays in project construction caused by unforeseen site conditions and prolonged bad weather, the Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation Department announced Thursday.

The park, which is being constructed at the corner of South Church and 3rd streets, will serve as a hub for cultural arts and fitness activities in uptown Charlotte.

"We appreciate everyone's patience as we complete the construction process of the park," said Jim Garges, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation director. "We are very excited about the vast array of cultural arts programs that will be offered at the park."

The postponement means that the park will now open right before the Sept. 2 birthday of the late artist and native Charlottean. Bearden was born in 1911 and passed away in 1988.

The park will sit in Third Ward, adjacent to the new BB&T Ballpark that will house the Charlotte Knights. It is expected to open next year.

Grand opening festivities will include live music, children's activities, street performances, garden tours and much more.
