MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

A CSX freight train hit a tractor trailer in Union County Tuesday afternoon.

The incident was reported just before 5 p.m. at Old Charlotte Highway and N. Rocky River Road, according to Union County EMS.

A CSX spokesman said the freight train was headed to Aberdeen, NC from Flint, Michigan carrying a load of 70 grain cars. Two locomotives were pulling the load.

An 18 wheeler hauling PVC pipe was traveling eastbound on Old Charlotte when the traffic in front of him stopped. The 18 wheeler stopped on the train tracks and while he was on the tracks the crossing arms started to come down.

The truck driver tried to move to the right to get out of the way but he could not do so. The train came to the intersection and collided with the left rear corner of the trailer.

A total of four people were transported to CMC-Union for treatment of their injuries. The truck driver was charged for stopping on a rail road crossing, Monroe police said.

There were a total of four vehicles involved.
