Man wanted for assaulting woman dies while fleeing officer

A man wanted for punching and kicking a woman early Monday morning died in a single-vehicle crash while fleeing a pursuing deputy, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. on Founders Road, approximately four miles east of Pelion.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts says Ellis Scarborough, 46, was wanted in connection with an assault on a 47-year-old female acquaintance.

Metts said Scarborough severely hurt the woman by punching and kicking her in the face at a home at 275 Clermont Lakes Drive. Scarborough also threatened to kill the woman, the sheriff said.

After the assault was reported to authorities, deputies encountered Scarborough driving on Clermont Lakes Drive and attempted to stop him. After Scarborough refused to stop, the patrol supervisor started a pursuit, Metts said.

During the pursuit, Scarborough ran off the left side of Founders Road and struck a utility pole, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Scarborough was later pronounced dead.

Metts said the patrol supervisor was not involved in the collision.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Lexington County Coroner's Office are investigating the incident, Metts said.
