Walking to defeat ALS

Hundreds of people filled Symphony Park on Saturday for the Jim "Catfish" Hunter chapter of the Walk to Defeat ALS.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.  Patients in later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

The walk raises money for research, patient services and advocacy.

WBTV anchor and consumer reporter Kristen Miranda helped to kick off the event.
