Police believe they found a new piece of evidence from the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.
Surveyors working just a couple of blocks from the World Trade Center discovered what they're pretty sure is a piece of airplane landing gear.
The metal machine part may have been sitting in a small New York alleyway in a space between two buildings only 18 inches wide.
Police say it contains a highly visible Boeing identification number. The National Transportation Safety Board will analyze it and to try to match it to one of the doomed flights. But, it will take a few days to remove it.
Investigators from the medical examiner's office will first inspect the alley for contaminants as well as for possible human remains.
The building where the metal piece was found is the future home of an Islamic Community Center. When the plans were made public several years ago, opponents said it was inappropriate to put a Muslim facility so close to the site of attacks by Islamic extremists. The site became the focal point for a national debate on religious freedom.
The NYPD says it has not yet determined whether the piece of debris fell in between the buildings on 9/11, or whether it was placed there more recently.
It says it considers it more a historical artifact than a piece of criminal evidence.
