TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

It can only be described as a gruesome murder. Tempe police said a man walked up to them to say his ex-girlfriend was dead in his apartment.

Officers found Rebecca Kasper's body bound in his bathroom. Court documents said it had been there for days, with common household items like coffee grounds and baking soda used to mask the smell.

Her ex-boyfriend, Luis Soltero, 22, is behind bars charged with premeditated murder.

"This is like lightning out of the clear blue sky, we had no idea that this was coming," said the victim's father, Dan Kasper.

He said Arizona State University was the only school to which Rebecca Kasper applied. Dan Kasper said he was always uneasy about his daughter studying far away from their home in Minnesota, but realized his daughter was a hardcore Sun Devil who loved Arizona.

"I feel like this should be somebody else's story," he said.

Rebecca Kasper, also known as Becky, was described as a happy go-getter who loved cats. She was a marketing major at the W.P. Carey School of Business. She was going to graduate a year early.

"She was probably on her way to something great, and it just shattered like that," business student Mason Popp said.

"She was going places for sure, if she was here," business student Stephania Ochs said.

Court documents show Rebecca Kasper's body was found handcuffed and beaten in her ex-boyfriend's apartment bathroom.

The paperwork reveals a handwritten note was also found at the scene that matched Soltero's handwriting. It was unsigned, but read, "I killed her because I had to end her life. I did not treat her right. I don't know where I go from here, do I kill again, end it with myself or become invisible."

Dan Kasper said he met Soltero before and didn't see any warning signs.

"He was quiet, laid back and easy going, seemed like a good kid," he said.

Dan Kasper said his daughter met Soltero while working for Southwest Books in Arizona. He said they broke up a few weeks ago.
