Sheriff: Man arrested after leading deputies on brief chase in stolen van

NEWTON, NC (WBTV) -

Deputies in Catawba County say they have arrested a man who stole a van and led police on a chase through Claremont Tuesday morning.

Shane Lee Huffman, 34, is charged with felony fleeing to elude, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, driving while under the influence, driving while licensed revoked and careless and reckless driving, according to a news release from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.

Police say Huffman jumped into the van belonging to McKinley Leather when they driver got out of the van at Ramsey Finishing and walked inside.

Deputies located the van at 12:36 p.m. driving down Shiloh Road off NC Highway 10.

Huffman drove away from the deputies down Murray's Mill Road until it dead ended on Murray Lane.

Huffman stopped in a yard with a flat tire, where he was arrested.

Bond is set at $30,000.

    A person died Monday afternoon from injuries sustained in a car crash April 11 in east Charlotte. Officials say the crash happened just before 9 a.m. in the 1500 block of Shamrock Drive near Farley Street. An investigation revealed a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, driven by Jimmy Hamilton, was traveling on Shamrock Drive and ran off the roadway to the right at Farley Street.
