Beatties Ford median has neighbors concerned

The project to widen several miles of Beatties Ford Road in Northwest Charlotte is well underway, but neighbors in one stretch of the project say they're opposed to a concrete median being planted right in the middle of their part of the road.

"It's a negative impact to me as a business owner and King Funeral Home as a business owner," said Paul Holmes, who owns a consulting company in the area. He says his clients would be impacted by having to make U-turns to get to his business. King Funeral Home also says their business would suffer. Holmes has suggested a painted median to the city but the idea was turned down.

"Painted median is not a safe way to have pedestrian safety and vehicle safety," Charlotte City Councilman James Mitchell says city engineers have re-drawn plans to allow for traffic to easily leave the funeral  home. Mitchell also says concrete medians planted with trees are the "new standard" in street design.

Mitchell says he believes neighbors who are opposed, will see the benefit once the medians are installed.

Holmes says he won't change his mind and asks city leaders to treat his business the same as larger ones in the city.

"We're not Chiquita banana, we're not Met Life no, we're not the Panthers, no. But we do vote," said Holmes.
