Gamecocks, Bulldogs to face off in Shelby for ALWS fundraiser

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) -

The American Legion World Series has secured two nationally known baseball teams that will play Gardner-Webb University at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in spring of 2013.

Wake Forest University, a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the University of South Carolina, a member of the SoutheasternConference, have agreed to play off-site home games as a fundraiser for the American Legion World Series.
 
Wake Forest will take on Gardner-WebbWednesday, March 13, at 6 p.m. atVeterans Field on the campus of Shelby High School. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are coached by Tom Walter, now in his fourth season as head coach. Wake Forest has made two appearances in the College World Series and has won one NCAA tournament.
 
The University of South Carolina is scheduled to play Gardner-Webb Tuesday, April 23,at 6 p.m. at Veterans Field. In the last five years, the University of South Carolina has won two back-to-back national championships and was the runner up in 2012.

Shelby native Chad Holbrook is the head coach of the Gamecocks and was recently named the No. 10 best recruiter in all of college sports by ESPNU and ESPN. As a high school baseball player, Holbrook played at Veterans Field.
 
The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs are coached by Cherryville native Rusty Stroupe. He has led the Bulldogs for 10 straight seasons. His tenure includes appearances in conference championship games twice as part of the Atlantic Sun and the Big South conferences.
 
American Legion World Series Co-Chairman Eddie Holbrook stated, "We appreciate the cooperation of these universities in planning these events as fundraisers for the American Legion World Series," said American Legion World Series Co-Chairman Eddie Holbrook. "We are looking forward to fantastic crowds, exciting baseball and a great time!"

Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium is the official home of the American Legion World Series, a five-day tournament played each August. The American Legion World Series is the only annual national sports event held in Cleveland County.
