TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A dog on the loose in north Toledo caused four people to be sent to the hospital, and Toledo Police to take action.

It happened around 8 p.m. Monday, on Hudson Street, near Lagrange.

Victims had a variety of injuries, including bite wounds and scratches. Witnesses say the dog had been running loose in the neighborhood for much of the day, when it attacked another dog.

That's when the four victims jumped in, trying to save the dog. When police arrived, we're told they tried to corral the pit bull, but eventually had to shoot it to keep it from getting away.

Residents in the neighborhood were shocked by the scene.

"I saw the dog chewing up some people," said Jeremiah Colston. "There was just so much blood."

No word on the condition of the victims, or if the dog's owner may face charges.
