Tornado Watch in effect for much of WBTV viewing area

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Saprtanburg has issued a Tornado Watch for much of the WBTV viewing area until 9 p.m. Friday night.

The counties included in the watch are Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Catawba, Mecklenburg, Union, Stanly, Anson, Iredell, Rowan, Cabarrus, Alexander.

WBTV Meteorologist Ashley Batey expects showers to start mid-afternoon, possibly between 2 and 4 p.m. in Charlotte.

The highest threat is strong, damaging straight-line winds. There could also be heavy downpours with an isolated tornado threat.

Ashley expects the front will move out this evening, leaving much cooler temperatures in its wake. Expect highs in the mid-60s and lows in the 40s.

There is also a freeze warning in effect for the mountains for Saturday night and Sunday morning.
