A Nashville attorney's law license has been suspended after court officials in Rutherford County discovered the attorney had paid himself more than $50,000 in unauthorized legal fees from the account of a client in a nursing home.
Attorney John E. Clemmons, according to court documents, is accused of writing a series of checks to himself while serving as a conservator for a disabled man named Russell Church.
The unauthorized payments came to the attention of Rutherford County Chancery Court Clerk and Master John Bratcher.
"When we got that accounting, we knew that we had a problem," Bratcher said. "We prepared a report for the chancellor immediately and prepared an order to have him removed."
Clemmons no longer serves as Church's conservator. The case has been referred to the district attorney's office for possible prosecution. Clemmons declined to comment.
