Two robberies have been reported near the University of Toledo campus Wednesday.
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A second robbery has been reported near the University of Toledo campus.
The incident happened at the Cocoa Beach Tanning Salon on Dorr Street. No weapon was seen, but was implied.
No surveillance pictures of this incident are currently available, but employees describe the suspect similar to the suspect who robbed a Subway earlier.
The university posted the following on its Facebook page:
"Please stay clear of this area south of campus
UT ALERT: Toledo Police are on scene at the Rocket Plaza, 2900 Dorr Street, south of the Main Campus, for a report of a possible robbery. The suspect is described as a black male - taller, medium build, wearing an orange construction vest, brown sweatshirt, and black pants. The suspect fled west from behind Rocket Plaza. Unknown if the suspect was armed. Please be cautious if you are in this area."
Neither incident happened on campus, but UT Police Chief Jeff Newton says his department immediately worked to notify students.
"Many students are, of course, living in the communities off campus and we want to make sure that problems happening off campus aren't coming on campus," said Newton.
Even though the UT Police department notified students, they still feel on edge.
"It's scary. We go there every time for lunch, at least twice a week," said Rodney Foster, a junior at UT.
Students say it's hard to think something like this could happen so close to home, but they're happy the university is doing what it can to keep them informed and safe.
"It's good to go to a safe university and to keep students updated on their safety around the university," said Foster.
"We think awareness is key. Our officers are out there patrolling, trying to provide that presence, but at the same time, if students know what's going on, we can keep them out of the area. That's key," said Newton.
Anyone with more information on either robbery is urged to contact police.
