LENOIR, NC (WBTV) -

Authorities in Lenoir say a man arrested and charged with first degree murder was on electronic house arrest for an assault with a deadly weapon charge from 2011.

Michael Joseph Whisnant, 36, was arrested Friday for the murder of Tammy Lynn Benge, 38, after police responded to a welfare check at a home on the 800 block of Wild Cherry Place, where they found Benge deceased.

How Benge was killed has not been released, but Captain Sid Pope says the investigation "is ongoing and is being treated as a domestic related homicide."

According to arrest and Caldwell County Clerk of Court records, Whisnant was charged in 2011 with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and assault on a female.

He was restricted to the Wild Cherry Place home where the incident happened under electronic house arrest. He was also ordered not to be around or have contact with the victim.

Whisnant is currently being held on no bond.

Anyone with information about this is asked to contact Caldwell County Crime stoppers at 828-758-8300.
