200 year old store re-opens

Posted: Updated:
Society Hill, SC -

Saturday marks the first time in almost 30 years that a designated historic site re-opens it's doors.

The Sompayrac General Store in Society Hill, SC, which is in Darlington County, first opened in 1815 and served as a mainstay for the community there.

The family owned business remained open for 198 years.

The stores re-opening Saturday is in an effort to raise money through the sale of collectibles to fund the Endangered Places Program of the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation.

Some of the collectibles that will be available include, displays, WWII posters, vintage calenders, tools and advertisements.
