George Bryant has been out of steady, full time work for years. "I'll take about anything right now." Robert Kent is needing a job as well. "If I have to change my career path, then I will do that."
Both men were among hundreds of people who gathered at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir Thursday for the 6th "Caldwell is Hiring" job fair.
The County Economic Development Commission organized the event with more than a dozen employers setting up booths to talk with prospective employees. Every company that came to the fair is hiring now and many plan to keep hiring into next year.
"We are growing and will continue to grow," said Van Brown of Carolina Prime Pet. The company started operations recently on Morganton Boulevard making treats for dogs.
Other companies new to the area showed up as well. Economic officials believe the area has turned a corner when it comes to employment. Even in the worst of times in recent years, there was always a company somewhere in the county that was hiring.
The problem, said officials, is that more jobs were being lost across the area than were being gained. That is starting to change they believe as evidenced by the number of jobs that were open just for the job fair.
More than 350 positions were being offered.
Jovan Mitchell said he was encouraged by what he heard from prospective employers. " I have two interviews so far so I am feeling better."
Local officials are hoping this will start to put a dent in the county's double-digit unemployment rate.
