PD: Tempe student threatened to shoot people at school

A Tempe teen has been arrested after allegedly making threats to shoot people at his school on Tuesday, police said.

The 16-year-old is a junior at Marcos De Niza High School.

Tempe police said they were contacted late Monday night and given information that the student had made threats on social media. He indicated he planned on a shooting at Marco De Niza on Tuesday, officers said.

The threatening tweet read: "Ok. Goodnight. Say hi to me tomorrow, and i'll remember not to hit you when i shoot up the school."

Tempe detectives immediately began an investigation and took the student into custody at his home early Tuesday morning.

"Detectives went out this morning. They contacted the student at his residence at about 4:30 this morning, and placed him under arrest," said Sgt. Michael Pooley with Tempe police.

"They did find a handgun that belonged to his stepfather. The handgun is the same handgun that is shown with him in the photos," Pooley continued.

Police said they believe the student was acting alone.

The student was booked into jail on a charge of interference with or disruption of an educational institution.
