Woman battling breast cancer gets surprise dream trip

Posted: Updated:

A woman battling breast cancer who was surprised at WBTV Studios with a check to make her dream trip to Africa come true has returned. And, she's shared some pictures of her experience.

In January, Wanda Bryant was told by her best friend, Fonda Bryant (same last name, no relation) that she had organized a surprise, and that Wanda needed to be there.

So, Wanda drove from her Aiken, South Carolina home to WBTV Studios, not knowing what she was getting into.

When she walked in, she was met by Wendy Bentien, a board member with the local charity "Go Jen Go!" a small non-profit established in honor of Jen Pagani, a Charlotte mother battling the same breast cancer as Wanda.

Wendy told Wanda she was here to give her something on behalf of "Go Jen Go!".  Wendy then reached in a bag and pulled out a thousand dollar check.  She handed it to Wanda.  Wendy told her it was a gift... just enough to pay for her church missionary trip to Africa.

For months, Wanda said she'd been trying to raise the money so she could go.

"I've been selling boxes of popcorn," Wanda said in January, "and just putting pennies together because I really, really wanted to go to West Ghana.  It's my lifelong dream of a trip."

Wanda left for her trip on February 26, and got back on March 8.

"She said it was very humbling as well as eye opening. She was grateful and very happy her health held up to let her go," Fonda told WBTV about her friend's trip, adding, "She is a wonderful, wonderful person. I thank "Go Jen Go!" again for helping my best friend!"

The trip was all due to Fonda's hard work. She went online looking for charities to help fund her friend's trip. She then contacted Anchor Molly Grantham via her Facebook page. Add a little bit of magic, some luck and a lot of energy over a 6-day period, and voila!

"I just wanted to give her something to help her," Fonda said. "To make her dream come true. I can't even put it into words.  I love her. She's been a great friend to me in my tough times, and I wanted to return the happiness."
