Detectives crack down on four sweepstakes parlors this week

Detectives in Charlotte cracked down on their third and fourth sweepstakes parlors this week.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Vice and Narcotics Division along with Alcohol Beverage Control Unit detectives are working to ensure compliance with North Carolina law.

Thursday, Detectives went to the Broadway Sweepstakes at South Tryon and 5th Avenue Sweepstakes, also on South Tryon.

As a result, detectives identified a combination of 83 electronic and slot machines in violation of North Carolina general statute 14-306.1A.  The machines contained poker, bingo, keno and other video games requiring players to deposit money.

Detectives seized the machines and more than $7,400 in cash.  

36-year-old Casey McMackin and 51-year-old Dennis Beckham, employees of the businesses, were charged under N.C. G.S. 14-292 for operation of slot machines. The owners of each business were identified.

The investigation is ongoing.

Tuesday, detectives raided the LPM Sweepstakes on Old Pineville Road, seizing 26 machines and $2,849 in cash. An employee was also charged.

Wednesday, detectives seized 24 machines and more than $1,500 in cash at the Queens Gold Sweepstakes. An employee there was also charged.
