Drivers headed out of town for the holiday weekend are still facing high gas prices. The average across North Carolina is $3.63 a gallon. The South Carolina average is $3.42 a gallon. In Charlotte we're paying the exact state average, $3.63.
Even though the prices are about thirty-cents lower than last Easter, it's still tough for some people to fill up.
"I'm on disability and my gas tank is on E," Driver Lawrence Wells said. Wells was one of more than 350 people that lined up to receive a free gas card from folks at New Beginnings Church in Matthews.
This is the second year for the giveaway and this year the church up'd the amount from $15 to $20 gas gift cards.
"We are living in tough economic times for many especially if you are on a limited income..it really is a help to them," Pastor Twanna Henderson said.
Beverly Dunn was the first in line for the freebie, sitting for more than 5 ½ hours for the giveaway to begin.
"I was shocked because usually places that give away something free there will be a thousand people out here already..most of them camp out at night. I said this was a blessing from God. This was just my day. So I'm happy to be here," Dunn said.
Henderson hopes to make the giveaway a yearly tradition. The goal, she tells me is to one day be able to fill up the tanks of hundreds of people.
