SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A real-life parking wars problem in Scottsdale turned deadly Wednesday night.

Police were checking out a complaint about a neighbor who kept parking his truck on the sidewalk. That's when an officer had to use his weapon.

Neighbors tell CBS 5 News they didn't think anyone would end up dead over a little dispute. Now they say they're on edge.

"They were fighting over a parking place," recounted a neighbor who didn't want to disclose her identity.

She said two people on her block weren't very happy with each other.

"The son was extremely loud and upset, you can tell he was very upset," she said.

She's referring to Presson Phillips Jr. and his son who live across the street from the person who called the cops on them. Scottsdale police say Officer Nathan Mullins, a seven-year veteran of Scottsdale police, showed up to find out what was going on.

"As he was there, a white SUV pulled up, we believe that was the male he was trying to contact. As the officer came to the driver's side of the door, the driver brandished a handgun in a threatening manner at the officer. The officer backed up and fired into the truck," said Sgt. Mark Clark.

Police say the officer shot and killed 72-year-old Phillips.

Some people say he was a very nice man who looked out for the people on his block.

"Constantly telling me to put shoes on, telling me to watch out for scorpions. Talking to me about flowers because he'd see me out here pulling my weeds and stuff," said a neighbor.

Mullins has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation gets under way.
