Unfinished Oakdale/485 interchange upsetting residents

Posted: Updated:

The 485 loop is one year away from completion. But some people in a Charlotte neighborhood who have been counting on the project to bring traffic to their businesses say they don't see the finish line.

Residents and business owners have been waiting a long time for the state Department of Transportation to finish the ramps at 485 and Oakdale Road. They might be in for an even longer wait.

And that's not the news Red Picklesimer wants to hear.

Picklesimer opened OakHill Golf Course in 1970. He says in the mid 90's the golf course had a lot of play.

"It's gone down now" Picklesimer says. "It's awful. Yeah. We've got a few regulars" but nothing compared to the bustling days before the 485 project started.

Picklesimer says, to build the highway, state officials cut through his golf course and took away four holes. He tried to rebound from that.

But then transportation officials left the ramps unpaved. Picklesimer says that is what's hurting his 175 acres of golf course.

"We think quite a bit, because people driving by now on 485 can see part of the course but it's not easy to get to" he says.

State transportation officials tell WBTV "the ramps were graded when the last segment of 485 was completed in 2004. D-O-T says paving of the ramps is not in the long range transportation plan because it's not a priority."

State officials say the" cost of completing the project wasn't significant enough to warrant inclusion." Transportation officials say they told residents and business owners it would eventually be built, but "not anytime in the near future."

Picklesimer says he doesn't see his future with the golf course. He's put it up for sale.

"This has been our baby – struggled to build it, maintain it our entire time. When they came through – knew it would hurt us some" he says, but he didn't imagine to this extent.
