Documents reveal more details surrounding weekend murder

The probable case affidavit contains more details about a weekend murder that left a mother dead and a father in critical condition.

Monday morning, 44-year-old Larry Maples was charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held in the Van Zandt county jail with no bond. Van Zandt County authorities say Maples told them he had killed his wife, Heather Maples, and shot another man, Moses Clemente, who was in critical condition Monday night.

According to court documents, authorities were called to a home in the 2600 of FM 16 when Maples himself called 911 to report the murder.

In the probable cause affidavit, deputies say that Larry Maples told them he parked his truck one county road over from where the incident took place and walked to the home. Maples told authorities he entered the house through an unlocked door without the homeowner's permission. Deputies say while they were securing the crime scene, Larry's sister showed up because Larry had called her around 5:30 that morning to tell her that he had killed his wife and shot another man and would not be coming home.

According to that affidavit, Maples came out of the home when deputies arrived. Van Zandt County Sheriff Lindsey Ray says with him, Maples had a Colt .45 pistol.

In the affidavit, Maples repeatedly told authorities that the man he shot, Moses Clemente, was his wife's lover. However, the facts surrounding Heather and Clemente's relationship are unclear. Sheriff Lindsey Ray says Heather's father told him she had a past relationship with Clemente. "Her dad indicated to me that he did not know her current husband, [Larry Maples]," says Ray.

According to records at the Van Zandt County Clerk's Office, Heather and Larry married November 20 of last year. Heather's family says the two had recently split up and she went to stay with Clemente for safety.

A records search showed that Maples does have a criminal record. He was arrested for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle in 2004. For that charge, he was sentenced to two years probation.

Heather's family said they are not ready to make any kind of statement regarding her death at this time. The family is focusing on helping Heather's four children through this tragedy. Though, Heather's family did say they're confident Larry Maples will be brought to justice for taking Heather away from them.
