CMUD: Kitchen grease and tree roots caused wastewater spill

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department responded to a wastewater spill in southwest Charlotte.

The spill happened March 22, on Chicago Avenue. CMUD officials said a blockage of kitchen grease and tree roots caused an estimated 2,780 gallons of wastewater to spill. The water reached a tributary of Irwin Creek.

A crew was able to get to the spill within 53 minutes to clear the pipe and clean the area.
