CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte have charged a Macy's employee with embezzlement after they say she stole nearly $3,000 from the department store.

The incidents occurred from Sept. 29, 2012 until February 20 of 2013, according to the report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Shamika Freeman, 27, of Charlotte, is charged with embezzlement.

Freeman was a Macy's sales associate at the store's SouthPark location.

Police say Freeman was being questioned by the company for 17 questionable refund transactions between September and February, according to the report.

Police say she admitted to issuing the refunds even though the items being returned had not been paid for.

Freeman but all of the refunds on store gift cards and gave them to an unknown person.

The total value of the gift cards is estimated at $2,603.50.
