Deputy injured during training exercise at gun range


A Gaston County Sheriff's Deputy was shot by a trainee during an accidental discharge incident Friday afternoon.

The incident happened at about 4 p.m. in the Gaston College facility which is located inside the grounds of the Gastonia Police Firearms and Tactical Training Center.

A Gaston College student was shot in the hip after another student's handgun accidentally discharged.

The Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) class, with more than 20 students, had been at the range all week.

One student was having a problem with a handgun, and an instructor was assisting the student when the weapon accidentally discharged.

The injured student is a deputy with the Gaston County Sheriff's Office, according to Sheriff Alan Cloninger, and is currently in good condition at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

The Gastonia Police Department's Detective Bureau is in early stages of an investigation into the shooting.

No names are being released at this time.
