Cinder blocks and ceiling tiles fell on a customer at Westgate Mall on Friday, according to Spartanburg Fire Marshal Brad Hall.
The collapse happened about 2 p.m. at the jewelry counter at the JC Penny store inside the mall.
Hall said part of a cinder block wall above the ceiling shifted, causing nearly 15 of the concrete blocks to fall through the drop ceiling. He said some of the blocks and pieces of the ceiling hit a woman who was shopping nearby.
The area was cordoned off and a building inspector was called in, Hall said. He said the inspector said the store needs to have a structural engineer determine why the blocks fell and if something needs to be repaired.
The woman who was hit by the falling debris was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.
