Sheriff's Office seizes illegal gambling machines

Beginning March 7th, 2013 the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office investigators and State Law Enforcement officials began checking businesses throughout the county in search of illegal gaming devices.

Since that date, 15 machines were located at 4 different establishments.

Those machines were seized and carried before a Lancaster County magistrate.  Each of the machines was deemed unlawful by the magistrate.  The owners of the machines were provided a 15 day window to appeal the ruling.

After the expiration of 15 day period the machines will be destroyed.

"From this point forward anyone found with an unlawful gaming machine will be charged criminally.  We have been extremely lenient and allowed owner's ample opportunity to remove these machines from the county.  We will extend that leniency no longer." Sheriff Faile said.

"We will continue to work closely with the State Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Attorney General's office to locate these machines, seize them, seek their destruction, and to charge anyone possessing or operating these gaming machines," he said. "There are numerous rulings in support of the law which are clear."

Sheriff Faile said Section 12-21-2710 of the S.C. Code of Laws outlines the types of machines and devices prohibited by law.

"The law is clear and there are no loopholes," he said. "There have been over 1,200 of these machines seized around the state. If we find any in Lancaster County, they will be taken and those numbers will be added to the statewide total."

Anyone with information about these types of machines in Lancaster County are encouraged to contact the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department at (803) 283-3388.
