BISBEE, AZ (AP) -
The Bisbee City Council is poised to make the southeastern Arizona town the first in the state to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples.
The Sierra Vista Herald reports an ordinance endorsed unanimously by the council on an initial vote Tuesday would give same-sex couples in civil unions the same rights in the city as married couples.
The City Council is scheduled to take formal action on the proposed ordinance April 2.
Some Arizona cities such as Tucson have policies for recognizing domestic partnerships, but Bisbee's ordinance appears to be much more comprehensive.
Bisbee is a former mining community that is now known mostly as an artist's haven and tourist destination.
