A local organization is hosting a 5K race for the Vail Meadows Equestrian Center after a fire killed at least ten horses, six of which were therapy horses, in the early morning hours of March 21.
Organizers say the Run for the Meadows 5K race started as a way of raising money for Vail Meadows, a non-profit organization that use horses as therapy for mentally and physically handicapped children and adults.
The original goal of the 5K race was to raise money for Vail Meadows to use as they see fit.
Others in the community are also stepping up to help out. Sharon Kahle, owner of Grassy Creek Riding Stable in Perrysburg, is helping with her own horses. After receiving a call form an Oregon Boy Scout troop that had weekend plans to go riding at Vail Meadows, Kahle stepped up with a generous offer.
"At this time, even if they [at Vail Meadows] had horses they could borrow and use, it would be kind of hard...to pull it together," Kahle said. "So I offered."
The only stipulation she gave the scouts was to make the payment check out to Vail Meadows. She said it's not much, but every little bit helps.
Icons Eatery in Oregon is having a spaghetti dinner on March 30, and
Eagle's Landing Golf Course will host a golf scramble on May 18.
The Run for the Meadows race will take place on Saturday, May 25. You can register here.
Donations to help the organization can also be made at the First Federal Bank of the Midwest on Navarre Avenue in Oregon. Vail Meadows can be contacted at 419-697-8960.
